  48. More on re-filling HP DeskJet ink cartridges.

  50. There was some worry mentioned a while back about re-filled ink clogging up
  51. the little plastic (sort of rubbery) hose.  The hose travels from the little
  52. coupling down through a sort of artificial-heart pump (where the hose is
  53. formed in a semi-circle and a little wheel rotary pinches the hose on its
  54. way around the semi-circle) and into the base of the unit where a 4x4 inch
  55. hunk of ink blotter paper sits to collect anything.
  56.  
  57. Apparently the hose is there for two reasons.  When the machine is off or idle,
  58. any ink "siphoning" will get directed into the blotter.  And, secondly, when
  59. you push the prime button, the little heart pump is engaged and a bunch of ink
  60. is sucked out of the cartridge.
  61.  
  62. Which leads me to this first observation:  DO NOT PRESS THE PRIMING BUTTON
  63. UNLESS YOU ACTUALLY FEEL IT IS NECESSARY -- you are just throwing away ink,
  64. and unless you re-fill your own cartridges, you are throwing away big
  65. money.
  66.  
  67. On power-up the cartridge moves about two inches from its resting place and
  68. does a different (electrical) kind of prime.  It shoots some ink into a
  69. little "L" shaped groove.  You can see the grove, and probably some dried
  70. ink, which you can clean if you are so motivated.
  71.  
  72. So, the hose should not get ink in it unless you press the priming button.
  73. If you do, or if you just like to clean things, or you are worried about
  74. your re-filled ink clogging the hose, do the following.
  75.  
  76. With the same hypodermic needle you used for refilling the ink cartridge,

  83. If the process seems stalled, you may want to remove the ink cartridge,
  84. power up the unit, and press the priming button.  This should help draw the
  85. water through the hose.  If your water DOESN'T go down the hose, then you
  86. have a clogged hose -- however, I don't consider this a likely event, and
  87. if you "wash" your hose once in a while and you don't use the priming
  88. button, it should never happen.

  149. The Atari ST is a pretty straighforward, sort of standard machine, which is
  150. probably why it has the power and following that it does.  Anyway, on
  151. this account you should check out general computer graphics texts--they
  152. have a number of quite inventive things to speed graphics to "arcade"
  153. quality.  You might also try a trip to the local arcade--sometimes it's
  154. interesting to sit around and try to figure out how some of the animation
  155. is done.

  185. I use KERMIT almost daily to transfer files  ST <<-->> VAX with no problem.
  186. You do not say what kinds of files you are transfering.  If they are binary,
  187. you need to SET FILE TYPE BINARY on the VAX.

  198. I am the try before you buy type, but I also refuse to pirate.  The result
  199. of this is that I buy very little software withmy hard earned dollars.
  200. However, I recently was given the Quick 1.6 demo, and found it very
  201. impressive.  Not onlydo I feel that posting a demo will gain you a sale
  202. (just as soon as I get my next paycheck, really) but I also think you
  203. have done me a service by letting me see something that I believe is
  204. worthwhile.  I think that demos are a useful advantage to Usenet access.
